There are so many kinds of yoga from flowing Vinyasa, calming Hatha, athletic Power or Ashtanga yoga, to holding poses for a long period of time in Iyengar
yoga. They are all different from each other not only because of intensity, but because of the poses or asanas that are inherent in the disciplines.
Yoga, no matter what type you practice, has so many benefits to your body that it should be integrated into your current exercise routine at least a couple times a week. Yoga works on balance, flexibility, muscular endurance, and core stability. It lengthens and strengthens your muscles in ways that other conventional exercise misses. Yoga is the perfect cross-trainer.
A misconception of yoga is that you have to already be flexible in order to properly practice this form of exercise. Modern yoga is not about putting your body in pretzel contortions. It is about poses that are modifiable and doable for people of all levels and abilities. No matter what your fitness level, your body will benefit.
A question often asked at the start of a yoga practice is whether it is better to do hot yoga in a 110 degree studio or yoga in a regular studio. Hot yoga is definitely not for everyone, but it is something everyone should try. It is very detoxifying and intense, but you will feel completely rejuvenated after. The warmth of the studio allows for greater flexibility within the poses and poses less risk to muscles that have not properly warmed up. If trying hot yoga for the first time, make sure you are properly hydrated and come prepared with a towel. You will sweat buckets!
Include yoga, whether hot or cold, into your current exercise routine and your body will get leaner, stronger, and more flexible. More importantly, your mind will clear and you will feel better than ever.
